The Resurrection
John 11: 25
"25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live"
A recent news post touted the latest up to date research on aging. According to the article scientists believe our brains start aging and losing their abilities at age 27.
We reach our peak at age 22. This all sounds very grim. In addition to this as I was trying to comb my hair this morning I couldn't help but notice the hole in my ozone layer on top of my head. Put in other words, my hair is thinning. With all the rapid advances in science I was sure we would have this problem solved by the time I reached my thirties, but we still search in vain for an answer to the great question of balding.
But I digress. Science also tells us that all the universe is in a state of atrophy. Take a stroll through an old neighborhood and you will see how the once newer houses now look out of date, old and mostly undesirable.
It seems we are stuck in a state of decay.
However, there is hope. In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Alma taught the people about the Resurrection:
Alma 40: 23
23 The soul shall be restored to the body, and the body to the soul; yea, and every limb and joint shall be restored to its body; yea, even a hair of the head shall not be lost; but all things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame.
After Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world atoned for our sins and died on the cross, He really did rise from death on the third day.
Latter-day Saints believe that this was a literal resurrection. It wasn't just a metaphor, and it wasn't just a "Spiritual" resurrection. Instead Jesus' body and spirit were indeed reunited never to be put apart again.
In addition to them being reunited, we know that his body was made perfect. So my worries about losing my hair and brain power will not be permanent.
Jesus broke the bands of Death. It fixed not only the problem of sin, but the problem of death. As I talked about in my last post, after we die, our bodies are laid to rest and our spirits go to the spirit world until the day of the resurrection.
When Jesus Christ comes to the earth again, fulfilling his promise of a second coming, the great resurrection day will commence.
Jesus spoke of this:
John 5:25-29
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Everyone will be resurrected, regardless of the choices they have made in this life. It is a free gift by the grace of Jesus Christ. However those choices they made will have an effect on what kind of resurrection they will receive.
As verse 29 said: "they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
If we accept Jesus Christ and live by the principles and ordinances of his Gospel, we will receive the "resurrection of life." If we do not, we will be resurrected in some way that will damn us or cut short our progression.
We will talk more about this aspect of the resurrection in another post, but for now, just know that the scriptures and revelations are clear. Your death and the death of your loved ones is only temporary.
You will be reunited with those who you have already lost to death. This is sure.
This will happen whether or not you choose to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ. However, it's important also to say here that if you do accept the fullness of the Gospel, even greater blessings than this are yours for the taking and are also available for your family.
I testify that the Lord Jesus Christ really did rise from the dead. And by doing so, he broke the bands of death that were holding tight to the whole human race. Because of Jesus, death is only a temporary state. You will be able to keep your body forever. It is a temple for your spirit. It is a blessing given from God.
Your loved ones who have died will live again in the flesh. You will be able to hug them and shed tears of joy with them, all because of our Savior Jesus.
If you would like to know the greater blessings and have access to them for your family, I urge you to accept the fullness of the gospel through baptism by those who hold the authority given to them from God to baptize you and cleanse you from sin.
Talk to the missionaries and remember the words of our Lord:
John 11: 25
"25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live"
